HOPEFUL

Standin on a corner, winter wind is spittin' words right in my face.
Waitin to audition like another 20 hopefuls for a place.
All I need's a chance to show the director I can make this part.
My career'll be a long one, all I need is somewhere I can make a start.

And I hope that I don't have to do the things I hear you've gotta do today.
Just to make the callback list, people will do anything you say.
Times I sit and wait and stare at the phone up on the wall.
Rehearsin' my reaction, and though they never make the call…

I'm hopeful. I'm hopeful.
I can feel these training wheels don't belong to me no more.
Want to throw 'em out the door.
Cause it's time to hit the floor…hopeful.

I'm a singer in a band, we're mostly country with a little R&B
tryin to break in to the circuit that's controlled by the agency
Most the time we got the play the songs the people know
They want to hear the songs they hear played on the radio…and that's alright.

We've got some songs. We are the bomb. You can buy our MP3's online.
A&R keeps tellin' us, success will come, they're sellin' us. It's fine.
Though we can't afford the rent
Cause money gets spent on our strings and gear…and that's alright

We're hopeful. We're hopeful.
We're can feel these training wheels don't belong to us no more.
Want to throw 'em out the door.
Cause it's time to hit the floor…hopeful.
Well I am the understudy to the star of the show that's here tonight
And I wish him well but he can tell that I can see myself beneath his lights.
And he acts just like a veteran star
And it feels right now like I'll never play the part…but that's alright

Cause I'm makin' connections with the movers and the shakers in this town.
I've made friends with people who have promised me they won't let me down.
I can see the signs now on Broadway "This boy sure can act!"
They're sayin nothin' now but they will bow before my talent, that's a fact.

I'm hopeful. I'm hopeful.
I can feel these training wheels don't belong to me no more.
Want to throw 'em out the door.
Cause it's time to hit the floor…hopeful.
